Essential Pittsburgh: Alycia Crawley Knauer and Evan Knauer

In the 1990s, Alycia Crawley Knauer and Evan Knauer were a Pittsburgh punk filmmaking power couple. Across a series of short films, Alycia would produce, shoot, and edit; Evan would write the scripts, direct, and his band, hometown favorites A.T.S., would do the music. Their narratives were consistently entertaining documents of fringe cultures and incidentally captured the landscape of a now bygone, grungier city just as it was on the cusp of change. We were heartbroken when Alycia passed away last year, but Evan will join us to remember her and the films they made together.

About Essential Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Sound + Image seeks to redefine our region’s film history this summer with the launch of our Essential Pittsburgh series. Too often when recounting the noteworthy makers who have worked here, we hear the same names. We wish to acknowledge the depth of creativity which has flourished here by spotlighting additional vital artists and their films from the 1960s through the 1990s. This landmark series is a continuation of our efforts to celebrate a fuller picture of independent, amateur, industrial, and experimental filmmaking talent, and to better situate Pittsburgh nationally as a place of rich cinematic history.
