In a world with few indisputable heroes, Maya Deren (1917-1961) is one of them, making movies her own way and on practically no budget (in her own words, her films were made “for the price of the lipstick in a single Hollywood production”) at a time when infrastructure for outside-the-box film production and distribution barely existed. She had too few birthdays in her lifetime, so we at Pittsburgh Sound + Image have a tradition of throwing birthday parties for her.
Join us at Harris Theater, as we celebrate the legendary experimental filmmaker’s 109th birthday (belatedly, but still in time for Taurus season.) Our all-celluloid lineup includes a her major works: Meshes of the Afternoon (ranked 16th greatest film of all time in Sight & Sound’s most recent poll), A Study in Choreography for Camera, Meditation on Violence, Ritual in Transfigured Time (with a brand new live score by Ill Fitting Party), At Land, and The Very Eye of Night.
PLUS: the shot-in-Pittsburgh outtakes from Ritual in Transfigured Time and other surprises! Everything presented as it was meant to be seen: on 16mm. After the films, we’ll sing Happy Birthday and blow out the candles for Maya. Admission includes birthday cake for everyone in attendance!
