“We do not have cats, cats have us. Cats are our Gods, the most expansive and approachable of Gods, that goes without saying.” – Chris Marker
Cats and short-form avant-garde film: a match made in heaven. The domain of avant-garde filmmaking is often a solitary one, with artists completing works by themselves or with a small group of collaborators. Thus, many of our favorite filmmakers have often turned their cameras (or their animation stands) towards our ever-present, lovable feline friends. Join us for an evening of some of our favorite cat-centric films presented from 16mm and Super 8 film prints. Included in this program are 11 films from local and national artists (all 16mm unless otherwise noted):
Mary Beams – Tub Film
Stan Brakhage – Cat’s Cradle and The Cat of the Worm’s Green Realm
Pola Chapelle – How to Draw a Cat
Tippi Comden – Cats Got My Tongue (Super 8)
Sarah Jane Lapp – The Neighborhood Cat
Standish Lawder – Catfilm for Katy and Cynnie
Henry Roll – Cats in Snow (Super 8)
Carolee Schneemann – Fuses
Mary Anne Spencer – The White Cat
Joyce Wieland – Catfood
Suggested for mature audiences only.
